Get Kids to Eat Their Dinner - Take 4,352

Abi usually refuses to eat the "yucky/healthy" food I make for dinner.  Kinda kills the June Cleaver in me and makes me want to vent and foam at the mouth and vow that I will never cook again, but I try to push through it and remember that, moans and groans aside, it is my duty to feed them.  And on days that they are all grateful, it is also a joy.

So, in another attempt to get a 4 year old to bear her suffering of choking down meals of curry or salad in silence, Abi is working her way towards a toy.  She is required to eat all her food and not verbally complain or cry during the meal.  If she completes said task, she earns a sticker.  After 14 successful meals, she will have enough stickers.

Today will be meal #11 and so far she's got 3 stickers.  Might take her a while.  I was easy on her last night, when we had "breakfast for dinner" - bacon, eggs and hashbrowns, not too hard right?  Tonight is soup, so scratch tonight.  We'll keep trying to get these kids to eat dinner.  Feel free to share any secrets you've learned or that work for your kids.

  1. Cute Tiffanie! It is a roller coaster trying to serve these little ones! Our children are not required to eat dinner (but no snacks or dessert afterward-- dinner is still available if they're hungry afterwards.) But they are not allowed to make any negative comments about the food. If they do, they must leave the table. They can return when they have (read, recited, or memorized-- depending on their age) a Speak Nicely Scripture. We haven't had to use them for a few years since the younger kids have learned from the older ones, but here are some examples of the scriptures from my list:

    Mosiah 4: 30
30 But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not.

    2 Ne. 25: 26
26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

    Proverbs 15:1
1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

    Proverbs 15:2
2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

I have more. :) Good luck with cute Abi!
