JeNeal's Obituary

Here is the obituary for Corey's mom. This first photo here below is in the obituary, and the others are ones that we liked as we've been looking through photos for the funeral.

Obituary of JeNeal Curtis Wride

IN THE CARE OF

Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary

JeNeal Curtis Wride passed away in her sleep July 22, 2023. She was th e oldest of two daughters born to Reid Franklin and Trelma Elvira Hain Curtis. JeNeal is survived by her husband, Wayne, and her children Nancy Wride (Jeremy Cloward), Mark Wride (Chalane Casdorph), and Corey Wride (Tiffanie Hibbert), and eighteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Sharon Kay Curtis Stoker, and her brother-in-law Ronald John Stoker.

JeNeal was a strong and tenacious woman who didn’t let anything keep her from living the full and rich life she desired. At the age of thirteen she lost the use of her legs due to polio. Navigating life with the aid of full-leg braces and crutches, JeNeal graduated college, gave birth to and raised three children, taught high school, and junior high for twenty years. She also served over twenty years in the Primary organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She never thought of herself as handicapped, and she did not like the idea that others saw her as such.

JeNeal married Wayne Prior Wride August 14, 1964, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. The couple grew up in Payson and graduated high school a year apart. Their relationship developed while they were both employed at the Payson Huish Theater. After JeNeal graduated from BYU with a degree in secondary education she became a member of the first faculty of Skyline High School in 1962. After Wayne completed collage he and JeNeal settled in East Millcreek where they built a life and reared a family founded upon the gospel, love, commitment, and hard work.

Sewing and doing crafts of all kinds were chief among JeNeal’s talents and loves in life. If it was creative, she could do it. When her children were younger, she designed and sewed jumpsuits for them. She sewed much of her own clothing. In order to always have gifts on-hand for newborns, she made crochet-edged receiving blankets in her spare time. For each day of the annual “Wride family vacation” week in Park City she prepared for and hosted a crafting hour for the grandchildren.

Other loves of JeNeal’s included: shopping--especially finding a good bargain, dark chocolate, playing “5000” with her children and grandchildren, traveling, shopping, collecting and trying out new recipes, family photos, decorating her home for every holiday/season, more shopping, solving Sudoku puzzles, sushi, the annual family vacation week in Park City, and shopping for great bargains! She did not love wet floors, snowy sidewalks, cats, missing a good bargain, or August heat.

Although she was not a boy scout, JeNeal adhered to the motto “Be Prepared”. At any given moment, she could locate in her purse just about anything one might need in an emergency: Band-Aid, scissors, paring knife, paper clip, cough drops, aspirin, plastic baggie, dice, and a host of other handy “stuff”.

(with Peter in 2019)

Mostly, JeNeal loved anything that revolved around her family; anything that drew them closer to her and Wayne, and closer together. One way the couple did this was by seizing every opportunity to travel together. When the kids were younger, the family enjoyed road trips, going camping, and visiting Disneyland. In later years Wayne and JeNeal often hosted the kids and grandkids at their Marriott timeshare vacation villas in Southern California, visiting Disneyland on several occasions. They took the family to tour New Zealand (and Australia), Chile (and Argentina) after picking up their sons upon completion of their missionary service. They were fortunate to have traveled several times to Hawaii and twice to Europe. In 2008 they treated their children and grandchildren to a Mexican Riviera cruise.

During the last couple of decades, as post-polio syndrome set in and she could no longer boost herself up in order to stand with crutches, JeNeal did not slow her pace in supporting her children and grandchildren. Equipped with a three-wheel mobility scooter, JeNeal faithfully attended their many academic, sporting, church, and musical events, always rewarding their accomplishments with a bag of candy and cash.

Above the love she had for her family was the love JeNeal had for the Lord. At the time of her passing she and Wayne were serving as Church Service Missionaries in the Welfare Square Employment Office, a calling they had held for over thirteen years. She leaves a legacy of love and service. Until we see her again in the Lord’s presence, we will miss her deeply and look forward to the time when we will embrace each other and run with her through fields of heavenly flowers.

Rest

It was a busy weekend, and it was nice to have a day of rest yesterday.
Bear Lake was great. JeNeal passing away Saturday was not great for us, but we are so happy for her, that she is truly in a place of rest! We do not doubt where her spirit is right now and what she is doing. She is in a wonderful place. We all wish we could be there too! But we trust that we will be able to join her one day as we press forward until God calls us home. Until then, we will strive to be faithful to Christ and his commandments. So Sunday was a nice day to take a breather. We still have Mel here. Joseph and Ethan headed back to Provo, cause they both have work, Ethan at the MTC and Joseph at some senior home (I think?) Here at our house we've been talking about JeNeal and giving feedback on the obituary draft and also sharing memories. Here is the Corey I first had a crush on back in the early 90s...
Mel is working on a painting of JeNeal. So stuff like that going on here. Natalie is very helpful with getting Katharine dressed on Sundays. Natalie gets a few dresses down from the closet and let's Katharine point at one and then that means that's the one she chooses, haha cute.
The kids wasted a little bit of time bonding today over Instagram. They have a "Wride Sibs" chat where they send each other funny reels that they find. So that's fun.
This morning I took Lily down to BYU because she's going to a FSY thing in Mapledell. We are going to pick her up on Thursday for JeNeal's funeral. She didn't want to smile or for me to take a photo of her...
But I was quick and sneaky and got this one. Cute Lil. Have fun at EFY.
We'll see you Thursday for the funeral. They are doing the funeral on Thurs (asap) because Mel and Abi leave that evening for a trip to Europe for some concert things, and we all wanted them to be able to attend the funeral. We're sad for Hyrum and our nephew Seth that they are gone, but they'll be able to zoom in and watch it. Lots to do.

This Thing Men Call Death

At 5:30 last night, I sent a text to Corey "How are things?" And I'll let Corey's reply document most of what the past 24 hours have been like for him:

"Horrible. my mom is at home now. The hospice nurse just came. My mom is crying out in pain, but the pharmacy has not delivered the medication yet - we hope it will get here in about an hour? She is really dehydrated. The hospice nurse just left to visit a family where the patient just died but will come back as soon as she can. They do not give IVs for hydration in hospice. The hospice nurse says usually its about 72 hours from this point. The hospice nurse says once the pain meds get here she will be out until she passes. Joanne S is here and there have been other visitors. The nurse explained to me the process of going through her last breaths and when it comes. I went to the hospital this morning first thing - just to see if she was still alive. all that said, considering her situation I'm glad that she's here at home. I'm so grateful for what she has done for me and given me. it's draining to go sit next to someone and try to absorb some of their suffering - which doesn't appear to do anything for them, but drains the life from me. Around 7pm Jeremy's friend up the street had prescription drugs (not for mom) that the nurse gave her....so she has been sleeping peacefully since."

Corey listened to this talk yesterday, and was listening to it again this morning on his way to the temple and he was feeling very happy for his mom - Brent L. Top - What is This Thing Men Call Death" In that talk, Bro Top doesn't talk about hell at all, but assuming you are righteous, the spirit world is going to be pretty great. I have no doubt it will be great for JeNeal. On Corey's way to the temple, his sister called to say that JeNeal had passed away, they think around 6 am. If Corey had been at the temple when she died, that could have been cool - I wonder if she would have snuck in to say hi! But Corey  didn't go to the temple, and instead turned around and went to be with his dad. We left Bear Lake around 9:30, and came straight to be with Corey and his family. The mortuary was waiting to take JeNeal away until we were able to come say goodbye. Nancy captured this sweet photo of Daniel holding her hand.
The reunion was fun, aside from Corey not being there because of everything going on with his mom. He had the van, so we had to figure out how to get all of our stuff and all of our kids home. My parents and Neil brought most of our kids and stuff. They went to Neil's house, unloaded Neil's stuff from Mom's van, then they were able to fit our stuff in their van and get the kids in too. It was a bit of juggling. Plus a flat tire on the way! Wes helped fix that -
I arrived first with Mel, Abi, Sophi, Owen, Daniel, Peter and Katharine. Wes, Lily, and Natalie arrived via my parents & Grant an hour later after picking up the bench for the rental van and a reshuffling of luggage and people in Layton at Neil's house. Dad, Steph, and Grant giving Corey some love and support.
Inside, Corey talking with the little kids as they have their first experience with death.
I had been there for a bit with the little kids by the time my parents came with the WLN, so I decided to head home and unpack. I took Mel, Abi, Natalie, Owen, Daniel, Peter and Katharine with me and my parents followed me and helped unload our stuff. We walked inside and I looked at the table at some pretty bare milkweed... "Oh yeah! I have caterpillars!" They were big enough for the kids to hold -
They watched the caterpillars while I cleaned up the frass and got some new plants. They still had enough leaves to eat, but I got them some fresh plants and they were happy.

My lil' sis Patrice had some time before she flew out, so I invited her to come over and we had reunion leftovers for dinner and then went to the Temple Quarry to explore. Little kids played in the river (Natalie lost one of her sandals!)
And they climbed on boulders... and we old ladies did too!
It's been a little weird, maybe, to be having fun with family and a reunion while also experiencing death and sadness with JeNeal passing, but then again, I guess that's just life, right? Hard and good and sad and fun all mixed together.

Hibbert Reunion 2023

Today was the last full day at Bear Lake. Three days feels too short! We need a whole week of Hibberts, like the Wrides do. Sigh. Maybe next time? Tonight ended tonight with a group photo -
37 grandkids, two grandsons in law, 7 kids and 7 spouses. We were only missing a few today Hyrum and a few of Jersh's kids). We area good looking group. One of the last group pics of all the grandkids was 24 grandkids in May 2011 How our family has grown! Tonight we celebrated my parent's 50th wedding anniversary, which was this past February. We had come celebratory decorations and my brother Neil had some questions ready. We had them sit and play the wedding shoe game, where you ask them questions, they can't see each other, and they lift their shoe or their spouses shoe, depending on what they say the answer is to each questions, like "Who said 'I love you' first?" "Who initiated the first kiss?" and fun stuff like that.
It was fun to have everyone together. Grant is on the stairs here recording a video. Hopefully he'll make a sweet reunion video like he did last time for the 2019 reunion
And right now they are all down having a dance party. The cabin has quiet hours at 10:30, plus Camilla and her family are headed back to Indiana early tomorrow morning, so the last night of partying hard is a little under control. We also spent time tonight looking at the stars. It's been a great day. This morning everyone was active and playing outside. Patrice was feeling jazzed and ready to workout this morning, and shared a memory from YW camp years ago by having Neil join her doing "Go you Chicken Fat, Go!", ha!
That must have been after my time in Young Womens, cause I don't remember that at all. But it was funny. Maybe I'll make my kids do that...  So then Patrice and I went to the gym. Camilla and kids were down there at the basketball court and Neil's kids were playing pickleball. And there was the other usual fun today at the cabin - playing Uno Jenga - Lily was a pro at that.
Wes played more guitar serenading for Katharine ~
We spent most of today at the lake. I didn't join them there yesterday, but got plenty of pics today to make up for it. We got a ride in Trice's rental 4 wheel car - Cute Katharine.
The guys had some intense games of Spikeball.
That was fun to sit in the shade and watch them dive for it and splash in the water.
Ethan's favorite mission companion Elder Opheikens came and played spikeball at the beach with him. Elder Opheikens just happened to be in Bear Lake doing construction or something. Wes in the game with Uncle Neil, Trevor, and cousin Mikey.
The kids spent most of the day far out on a dock. Grant was out there with them. Bringing the kids back to the shore -
It was really fun watching Katharine.
Let me restate that: It was fun watching Melodie watch and enjoy her. I like watching Katharine, but it's even more fun sharing it.
Katharine was very present with the water.
Like rolling around it in, fingering it, squishing the sand in her little fists -
Here's a video of her eating dirt and lapping up the water, ick! With Peter running over to check on her every now and then.
Looks like Katharine's had enough fun, she's ready to go back to the cabin and get clean and warm.
Mel loves Katharine!
Abi and I also tried to get a few pictures of us doing handstands and headstands. Here's one Abi did - doesn't it look amazing?!?!
I took a video and we were able to do that screenshot as she did a walkover. We both have a goal to actually be able to hold that someday. Here's my best handstand shot -
I won't share my worst, but it was of me like that with my legs flailing as I fell over. Headstands are a little less risky... Abi tried to get a shot with the reflection to make it more instagram worthy.
Ok, about time to wrap it up. Katharine, you ready to head back to the cabin? She had a great time playing in the shallow water. Cute little head.
We started to pack up as we saw dark clouds rolling in from the northwest.
I had brought an extra suit for Katharine, so we got her dressed and warm in dry clothes. She fell asleep on Joseph's lap after we got back, as I was showering and changing.
Cute baby.
Joseph was working on med school application essays.
Then it was more card games and video games for the kids for the rest of the night until our dance party.
Check out tomorrow is at 10. We'll be trying to pack up quickly too, to get back and see Corey and his mom. They were at the hospital most of the day but JeNeal is now home on hospice. Corey said she was in pain and her pain medication took a while to come, but now she has it and she is sleeping, breathing heavily through her mouth with oxygen. Corey took the van on Wednesday, which had the carseats in it, but Jared and Jersh came up tonight (they weren't able to come until today) so Corey took the carseats  to them, so now we're ready for us to go home tomorrow. It's been a fun week. Looking forward to the next Hibbert Reunion!

Reunion Biking and More

It was an eventful day up here at Bear Lake! This morning started off with me trying to keep up with my niece, Xela, and her husband Trevor, on a bike ride! Trevor had his eye on a trail that was an hour away, so we figured it out last night: Grant volunteered to come with us to be our shuttle driver. He said he would like the time alone in the mountains while he waited for us. He drove us to Tony Grove, and that is where we began our climb. We had an ascent of  up to White Pine Lake, and enjoyed a few moments there in the beauty of nature.

I'm collecting headstand pictures of myself this summer at different places. Here is my White Pine Lake edition. I'm so cool.

I'm actually just proud that I'm confident enough to do it without a wall. Next step is handstands! That will be next summer's goal. On the ride down, I had two wipeouts. The first fall was a doozy on gravel. I slid, got very dirty, felt battered. I stood up and brushed myself off, knowing I'd be left with a few bruises. But I think I'm ok... and then I noticed my pant leg was soaked, and it wasn't from water from the stream we crossed a while back. It was blood. I lifted up my pant leg and I had a big deep tear in my shin. I thought it was from a rock, but after looking at it at home, I can see that the metal grips of my pedal had gouged my shin. Here I was applying pressure while Xela went to bring Trevor back. He was ahead, I was second, and Xela was behind me.

He had a bag of stuff but didn't have anything big enough. So I rolled up my pants to form a pad, took off my shoelace and tied it around my shin to try and keep pressure on it as we headed down the mountain for another hour. Then a few minutes after that, we were cruisin' along, and the trail isn't used that often apparently, cuase it was pretty overgrown and it was a bit hard to see the trail ahead. Or maybe it was just cause of all the snow and rain we've had this winter and spring that made the plants so healthy and tall. Anyway, I hit some log and went flying into the brush. Good thing there was a lot of brush instead of a tree or boulders, so it was kinda a soft landing, but I was like man, I am not doing well today!

Bring my bike back to the path. That's what I get for thinking I can keep up wiht the 20 year olds.

Overall, great experience. I don't know that I'll ever come back and ride that again, since it's so far away, even if we come up to Bear Lake again, so I'm glad I did it today. Here's an action shot of me that Trevor took. I'm hoping to look more relaxed/cooler if anyone ever takes my picture in the future.
We went from Tony Grove to White Pine Lake, then Bunchgrass on the way down. 14.07 miles. The ride took us 2 hours and 27 minutes. Corey volunteered to stay with K, who was awake when we left. I felt a little guilty going on a long ride that was an hour away, knowing the distance from the cabin would make it atelast a 4 hour thing...
At home, Xela and my mom binding up my wounds. Pic by Beka.
Relacing my shoelace. Mom and Xela were very attentive nurses.
Shortly after I got back, Corey decided he needed to head back to SL. His mom was not doing well. He finished up some work first... Lily drawing.
Kids have all been doing art. I especially loved Peter's pictures. Here's a portrait of him, Daniel and Owen.
A train? Who knows...
More people with glasses.
And spelling his name! PTR! Good job buddy!
Wes singing a ballad for Katharine.

Enjoying lunch -
Enjoying the view -
Kids playing pool - Wes is about to show is younger cousins who's boss.
And other kids playing video games. We had that on almost the whole time up here. It was a bit of a free for all.
Kids playing tag tonight as they ate popsicles.
A small storm blew through this evening and shared a rainbow with us -
Playing games at the dining table. Uncle Matt teaching how to play poker.
More video games downstairs.
Sitting around playing games, drawing, and just enjoying each others company.
Another collage by Peter of people and mountains? or teeth? or dinosaur scales? Some matrix-like world?
I should ask him what these pictures are of, but he has drawn so much and used so much creative energy today, that he was tuckered out and had to put himself to bed on a dining room chair.
I had fun talking tonight with my SIL Stephanie about life coaching stuff. She shared some scripture ideas with me - like this little card that shows one way you can mark your scripture with one red pencil.
Around 5:00pm I texted Corey and asked Corey how his mom was. He replied "She’s dying. It may be a few days. They recommend taking her home today but my dad isn’t ready for that so they are admitting her to the hospital (we are still in the ER). she is awake and trying to speak but we can’t understand her. At 5:15 she cried out 'daddy!'"
So that's sobering news to end the day on. Praying for her, Wayne, and Corey and his brother and sister.
